The Lakes Hospitality Association has come out in full support of the plans to build a high-level zip wire at Honister Slate Mine. The owner of the Honister Slate Mine attraction, who had previously proposed the idea as a new experience for visitors to the region, died in a helicopter accident last month. Now plans have been made to resurrect the scheme as a tribute to the mine owner, Mark Weir, where Mark’s family have re-submitted the application to the Lake District National Park Authority and are asking for the support of local businesses. Jonathan Denby, Chairman of the Lakes Hospitality Association said: “We are a 550 member strong organisation representing the interests of hotels, guest houses, self-catering accommodation providers, as well as attrations and other businesses in the tourism sector. We believe that Honister’s exciting plans for the new high-level zip wire will benefit all our members, as the new attraction will bring a new market of visitor to the Lake District from across a much wider age group. The Lakes Hospitality Association are fully behind this project as we see it as good for tourism, the Lake District and its visitors.” The 1,200-metre zip wire will start from a concealed cliff-face below the summit of Fleetwith Pike and end at the Honister Slate Mine buildings at the bottom of the mountain.
