047 Peover Hall

Walking down leafy lanes and across the open parkland of Peover Hall, where cows seem mildly surprised by strangers, you feel you have stepped back in time. This is a Cheshire landscape from a more leisurely age, when Manchester was half a day away, and London a three day's journey by stage coach. Pronounced Peever, the name comes from the river, meaning the bright one. And it is certainly appropriate, for in early summer the hedgerows and verges are bright with flowers, while azaleas and rhododendrons surround the hall in a patchwork of colour.
