448 Knott End

You really are beside the briny at Knott End for as well as the salty sea there are massive beds of rocksalt beneath your feet. The name comes from the Middle English "Knot", meaning a hillock, and it's an apt description for the little town at the end of a promontory overlooking Morecambe Bay. This prime spot, at the mouth of the River Wyre, was first settled by the Vikings and then the Romans. Perhaps for them the seaward view brought memories of distant home, but our eyes were drawn to the outlined Lakeland fells.
