465 Dolphinholme

Venturing into unfamiliar countryside is always a bit of an adventure. Will the paths have vanished? Will there be any waymarks to follow? Well, apart from a momentary lapse above Lane Head, Wyre Countryside Service are to be congratulated on their footpath signs around Dolphinholme. This village, centred on a worsted spinning mill on the River Wyre, grew from just a few farms at the end of the 18th century, but its main claim to fame is that it was the first village in the country to be lit by gas.
