739 Kinder Scout Summit

"This mountain hasn't got a summit" said our eldest son. To him all proper summits had a concrete pillar, an Ordnance Survey Trig Point. Well Kinder Scout hasn't got one. At least not on the summit where it should be. There's one on Kinder Low and there are three spot heights marked on the OS map and none are at the highest point. However a few years ago we accompanied two amateur surveyors, Graham Jackson and John Barnard who finally determined the location of the top. It was a small mound of peat amid a wilderness of the stuff, brown and rather wet. To celebrate we took our grandchildren to see the summit. But now, not only is there a proper cairn, it's at the right place and, to our delight, the peat wilderness has been re-vegetated. So, how about a family expedition to visit the summit of Manchester's favourite 2000ft mountain?
