905 Ilam and the Manifold Valley

Throwley Old Hall is one of the grandest ruins in Derbyshire, yet until recently it hid shyly above the Manifold Valley. Now this 16th century building is open to all. The rest of the walk is pretty good too, for here is Beeston Tor. This magnificent wall of limestone is where John usually stops and reminisces about how he has several times climbed The Thorn, so named because after an ascent of the the sheer wall of crag the route finishes through the middle of a hawthorn bush!
